When the United States entered WW1 in 1917, the first deadly air war in history had been raging over the Western Front for nearly three years. Some American pilots had flown in combat for the French as part of the "Lafayette Escadrille", and these hardened veterans formed the core of the fledgling US Army Air Service. Flying French made SPADs, the Americans soon proved themselves in swirling dogfights against the crack German Fokker pilots.
The wings worn by those daring aviators, as well as those of other Allied Nations, have been of great interest to collectors for decades, leading Cdr. To write another authoritative reference book on the subject in 2016.This SIGNED US Army WW1 AIR SERVICE PILOT WINGS FLIGHT BADGE INSIGNIA REFERENCE BOOK is in very good, unread condition, with some light denting to the left corners of the covers, some scattered scratching to the back cover, and with some light overall storage wear evident (ALL pictured).
